The Department of sociology came into existence in the year 1989 as a part of university’s broader vision to periodically update its academic programmes in order to respond to the ever increasing challenges of the changing society. The Department has since then, upheld its commitment towards fulfilling its mandate through the medium of quality instruction, research and collaboration. During its 27 year Journey, the Department has progressed by leaps and bounds, having outshined many mile stones. In its pursuit to attain the wider horizons, the Department brought into its fold the Masters in Social Work (MSW) in the year 2003, which later on under its aegis got established as a full-fledged School of social work.

The Department possesses a well established team of dedicated and experienced faculty members highly specialized in diverse fields of research and interest. The Department is supported by a sound infrastructure in the form of well designed and well equipped library-cum-seminar hall, Spacious and furnished lecture halls apart from the ICT enabled computer lab. By virtue of its dedicated faculty and sound infrastructure, the Department offers high quality teaching and research programmes in cutting-edge disciplines of regional, national and international importance.

Presently, the programmes that are being offered through the Department include M.A. and integrated Ph.D. In order to keep pace with the new challenges and prospects in the field of sociology, the Department has over the recent years diversified its academic base by bringing into its ambit a specter of new specializations.

To provide an enabling environment to the teachers, students and scholars in achieving excellence in teaching and fostering the spirit of scientific research, the Department organizes periodic Seminars/ Conferences/ Workshops and debates on buzzing issues of Local, national and international importance besides regularly engaging students in field work.

The Department owns the distinction of having produced the scores of Postgraduates, M. Phil. and Ph. D. scholars till date besides hundreds of such students who have qualified various state and national level competitive examinations such as NET/SET/JRF/KAS/IAS etc.

With all these features and twinkling aspiration to attain excellence in providing cutting edge learning experience, intellectual freedom, and critical research opportunities to its student, it is no wonder then, if the Department remains the first choice for the student and scholars.
