The date for external examination of course paper entitled, "Introduction to Diasporic Studies (Soc-08-DCE)" is postponed on 5th of January, 2017 and will now be held on 9th of January,2017.





                                   About the Sociology Department

The Department of Sociology was established in 1989. At that time the only course offered was M.A. Sociology. In 2003, Master in Social Work (MSW) was started. The department is offering many academic courses/programmes and undertakes a diverse range of activities and has well equipped library-cum-seminar hall, well furnished class rooms and a computer lab with ICT. The Department has presently 6 faculty members, two Professors, one Associate Professor, and three Assistant Professors. Every year students qualify various competitive examinations such as NET/JRF, SET, and KAS etc. Till date more than 100 students have qualified NET; more than 27 students have qualified SET; 6 students have qualified KAS. The Department has produced 35 M. Phil. and 16 Ph. D’s till date. The programs offered in the department are M. A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. The thrust areas of research is Kashmir Sociology, Women, Children and Society, Sociology of Health, Sociology of Education, Sociology of Polity, Sociology of Muslims/ Islam, Social Processes, Social Issues, Conflict/ Peace related Issues, Medical Sociology, Sociological Theory /Thought, Social Demography, Minorities and Backward Communities, Rural/Urban Sociology. The department is planning to set up a placement cell, so that there will be campus recruitment which in turn will be beneficial for the students. Every year, the department is organizing Seminars/ Conferences/ Workshops on priority areas as specified at local, national and International level. Teachers contribute to quality Journals and write books to cater to the needs of students, scholars etc. Eminent Scholars of repute are invited to for delivering special Lectures. The Department encourages students to participate in different extra-curricular activities such as debates, seminars, workshops. The Department also engages students in field work, session assignments, presentations, class tests and viva-voice.
